Sweeteners

There is much debate about which is better, “natural” sweeteners like sugar, honey and maple syrup, or artificial sweeteners, such as Splenda® or Nutrasweet®. Our general rule is to make food choices as close to nature as possible. This eliminates both white sugar and chemical sweeteners, although total avoidance can be difficult.

There are healthier ways to sweeten your food, such as fruit juices. The biggest challenge for many of us is that our palate is accustomed to sweetness. Sugar addiction is very real, but it can and should be overcome, for your health sake. The best way to keep our kids from developing a sweet tooth is to feed them healthy foods from infancy, and stay away from the prepackaged junk. My palate has changed to the point where I can’t even eat more than a bite of many sweet foods, like fudge. It can be done!

We have put together some resources that examine the different types of sweeteners. There is information out there, both pro and con, for every sweetener available. It is always wise to follow the money, and see if independent research is available. These articles are interesting and have some compelling data, but ultimately it’s up to you what you put into your body. I would encourage you to at least do some reading and make an informed choice.
